Web Hosting Fonts
It is an interesting fact that there are only 16 web friendly fonts which you need to consider for your web hosting fonts. What do we mean by "web friendly". These are common fonts that are freely available and suitable to use on most web browsers. In other words these fonts are not customised. The dangers of customised fonts is that the viewer may not be able to read the text without having to download a particular font type. Or even worse, have to pay a fee to download the special font type. This will scare off most casual web users which is exactly what you do not want to happen.
Wrong Choice of Web Hosting Font Can Destroy your SEO
You may say that a font is a font and it doesn't matter much. This is not true.
"Font choices for web designers used to be limited to 16 web-safe fonts. To display a typeface accurately, the font must be installed on the viewing computer.... As previously noted, there are ways to work around using a non-web-safe typeface with a website's design. Unfortunately, if not done properly, it can interfere with search engine optimization, or SEO." Trends in Web Typography by Heather McIntosh.
As is shown in the above extract, the wrong font can interfere with SEO reducing the possibility that your website is found by google, Bing or Yahoo. This could occur if the font text is shown as an image rather than as text. Many of the search engine robots can't "read" images so text image is not useful. This will, of course, badly affect the optimisation of your website - which is not a good thing, is it?
SEO is important for your website to be found, so you need to do everything you can to improve your SEO. So, clearly, you also need to do everything to make sure that SEO is not reduced. Choosing a web-friendly font is a good start.
Understanding Good Font Choice
Most word processing programs revert to Times Roman font. The good news is that every computer can read it. The bad news is that it is boring and doesn’t provide a good feel for your website. You may consider other fonts such as Verdana or Tahoma. The next thing to consider is that even Google is getting to act. They now offer Google Web fonts which are worth checking out.
Make sure that the font size is suitable. Many web designs have a text font size that is too small and it really should be at least 12 points. On the other hand, if the whole text is too large (i.e. not headings) then it smacks of shouting and looks very unprofessional. This is not what you want in deciding the right web hosting font type and size to maximise the benefits of your website.
